The Benefits of Humic Acid

by | Mar 31, 2020 | Lawncare Advice

Have you ever considered the benefits of humic acid for your lawn? Let’s take a look at how this simple treatment can improve your lawn’s health.

What is Humic Acid?

Humic substances are produced when microorganisms break down plant matter. They are organic bio-stimulants that greatly aid soil health, though a large part of what they do is not yet understood well by modern science. What we do know is that humic substances are extremely important components of organic matter for both plants and microorganisms.

Soil with higher levels of humic substances are shown to have increased microbial activity; this leads to increased break-down of organic matter into nutritive substances that are beneficial to plant growth. In addition to this increased soil nutrition, it is also believed that plants benefit directly from humic substances, absorbing them and using them for improved growth and health.

Some specific benefits observed with higher humic substance rates include: stimulation of root growth, resulting in an overall healthier plant; increased carbohydrate production, helping the plant to use other nutrients more efficiently; long-term organic matter buildup in soil, making a healthier environment for plants.

Due to an ever-increasing focus on environmentally friendly approaches to plant care, the importance of humates is being increasingly recognized. Humic substances packaged as additives are usually referred to as humic acid, and has become very popular in organic lawn care and organic gardening.

Why Does My Lawn Need Humic Acid?

For decades, traditional lawn care focused on feeding with the same three macro-nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These three nutrients are necessary to feed the grass plant; however, repeated exclusive use can impact the health of our soil negatively, causing an imbalance in soil microorganisms which are also necessary for plant health. Humic acid helps to re-balance soil microbial health and decrease the need for chemical fertilizers, which is good for the health of your lawn and the environment.

At Get Green, it is our hope to promote healthy lawn plants, especially through healthy soil, with our nutrition program for your lawn. We also want to promote the health of the people and pets who enjoy the lawns we care for. That is why we have incorporated the benefits of humic acid into our nutrition program.

While humic acid is not a cure-all for your lawn, it is a great tool to have in your belt, and I highly recommend adding it to your nutritional program. Your lawn will thank you for it.
